A BFR is a required flight review by 14 CFR 61.56. These are done every two years for pilot who want to continue flying.

How Long will it take?

The Minimum requirement is one hour of ground and one hour of flight.  Most BFRs will take 1-2 hours of ground and 1-2 hours of flight.

An IPC is a required proficiency check by 14 CF 61.57. These are done only if the instrument rated pilot does not meet the requirements of 61.57 in the required time frame. Some pilots never have to complete an IPC.

How Long will it take?

IPCs require the minimum of instrument approaches with holding, tracking, and intercepting radials. Pilots should plan on spending at least 1-2 hours on ground information and then 1-2 hours of flight.
